Missing SMS and call icons in contact screen

My contact screen is missing the SMS icon and the call icon. Empty circles appear instead, which I have to press to make a call/send a message. Unfortunately I'm a new user and cannot post a link to a screenshot here.
How can this be fixed? My phone is rooted - can I somehow restore the icon files?
