Proximity sensor during a phone call

I'm having a problem where the screen doesn't turn back on when I pull the phone away from my ear during a phone call. Mostly, I am trying to hang up on a phone call but the screen won't turn on unless I hit the power button. The proximity sensor works because if I wave my hand over the screen, the notifications pop up. Anyone else having this issue? Thanks in advance.
